A versatile musician, Teemu Hämäläinen began his musical career as a violinist and is also an author of orchestral arrangements. Conducting studies with professor Jorma Panula and a mentoring relationship with conductor John Nelson eventually led Hämäläinen to embark on a professional conducting career

He conducts a wide range of repertoire, with performing sacred choral works an important part of his artistic identity.  Hämäläinen is equally at home with improvised music, having notably collaborated with the jazz flautist and saxophonist Juhani "Junnu" Aaltonen.

Alongside his work as a guest conductor with Finnish professional orchestras, in 2013 Teemu Hämäläinen assumed the role of artistic director and conductor of the Finnish based E-ensemble. Hämäläinen has worked together with many internationally-renowned Finnish singers including sopranos Johanna Rusanen-Kartano, Mari Palo and Tuuli Lindeberg, mezzosoprano Melis Jaatinen, tenor Tuomas Katajala and basses Jaakko Ryhänen and Esa Ruuttunen
